There is more to Zodiac than Sun Signs, right?

Everyone is so set on determining compatibility and personality based on Sun Signs. But from what I understand, they actually only form a basis for your personality and overall aura. What should be payed attention to more often than not is the following:

Moon Sign - determines emotional characteristics

Mercury Sign - determines intellectual characteristics

Venus Sign - determines romantic compatibility

Mars Sign - determines physical tendencies

Ascendant - the sign that rose at the exact time of your birth

I realize these are rough definitions and could very well be wrong. Please fell free to correct any ill-information! But I was hoping to hear that Sun Signs actually only provide very general information in regards to a person. It is the other signs that really bring out all of our details, right?

I thought the zodiac was based from the stars

  I always thought zodiac came from the time when people thought there lives were plotted out by the stars

The positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto in the zodiac and in the 12 houses are considered. There's also Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and Imum Coeli. Finally, there are aspects (significant angles) between the things listed. There's dispute about what you say here. Jupiter is about intelligence, and the Ascendant controls your appearance, for example.
