There is something that recently made it's home in my roof...?

above my window on the second floor. At first it sounded like cooing, but sometimes there is scratching and just now it made thumping noises like it was scratching itself with a leg. Could it be rats? Do they 'nest' up high like that or could it be doves or pidgeons? The thumping sound makes it sound heavier than a bird. I can't see anything from the outside and think they are under the round clay tiles on the roof.

Could also be squirrels. They bore a hole in my neighbors house right through the siding.
