There is too much to lose if the NBA season gets cancelled – NBA Lockout Special (Part -1)
When the NBA Commissioner, David Stern came out of the negotiation room with a long face and put the blame solely on the players after Tuesday’s meeting in New York, one thing became very clear.
The Lockout is here to stay.
With both the owners and the players unwilling to compromise, the situation has put the NBA season in great peril. If the two parties continue to linger on their fight over money, not only will an entire NBA season be lost, many dwindling careers and rising aspirations, shall forever be lost in the ashes of time.
There are many teams in NBA, and in them there are many players who are in the twilight of their careers. A work stoppage like this will certainly put the curtains on their careers.
In this regard, the team which strikes the thought first are the Big Boys of the East, the Boston Celtics. The Celtics boast of the best legacy in the league. With 17 NBA Championships under their belt, they were on course to another glorious season last around. However, Miami Heat and their trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh stood in their way and the ageing trio in Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce just couldn’t match the athleticism and the speed.
This does not mean that Boston’s triple ripple don’t have it in them anymore. They have been extremely successful with each other and in short, they are Boston’s last hope of competing for a championship once more.
However time is running out. Allen will soon be 37, Garnett 36 and Pierce will be 35. A lost season will mean lesser minutes for the veteran stars and in the top heavy Eastern Conference, boasting of some of the most explosive players, the C’s just can’t afford that.
In a nutshell, a lost NBA season for the C’s effectively means 5 to 6 years without a NBA championship.
Then there is the case of the Los Angeles Lakers and their legendary shooting guard Kobe Bryant. The ‘Black Mamba’ is a man on a mission and that mission to chase down Michael Jordan’s six championship rings, not to mention Shaquille O’Neal’s all time points tally.
