1. Which was the newspaper?

2. Who was the president & in which year?

There in-fact is a popular picture of the the president who was reported to have lost the election holding the newspaper with the incorrect news item & beaming!

Googling didn't help. But i'm sure there is an instance in the US history like that. I have seen the photo.

  1. You're talking about the Truman vs Dewey election of 1948.  The defunct "Chicago Tribune," based on the results of a telephone poll, predicted a for Dewey, the Republican candidate.  In fact, Truman defeated Dewey, and there is the famous photo of the triumphant Truman holding up a copy of the Tribune with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman."  What the Tribune didn't take into consideration was that, at the time, not everyone had a phone, and those who did tended to me more affluent.  Then, as now, the more affluent tend toward the Republican party, so the poll results were faulty.

  2. I believe the newspaper was The Chicago Tribune, the president was Harry S Truman, the picture in the paper was Thomas Dewey, and the year was 1948. Google " The presidential election of 1948" and it will give you all the facts.
