  1. The first stimulus package had two components.  The checks to individuals and tax breaks for business.

When you hear suggestions about a second stimulus package check the fine print.  The public thinks they are talking about another check to their house; the government thinks it is talking about more depreciation deductions for business.

  2. And in addition to the other answers here our government spent $40 million to send letters out announcing the stimulus checks, what a waste of borrowed monies.

  3. Well, I totally agree with the first answer, but it is not the public who will make that decision.

The stimulus checks were financed with debt.  It was a ludicrous economic move considering the massive debt this nation is in already.  The nation's debt has helped devalue the dollar and is part of the reason we're in a recession.

Those stimulus checks were like putting a bandaid on the chest of someone having a heart attack, and then ignoring him because you figure that should do the trick.

  4. In my opinion, no - the overall economy doesn't need for a deficit increased even more than it is already!

  5. h**l no!  The current rebates doubled the projected budget deficit for FY08.  Early indications are that it has done little to "stimulate" the economy.  A lot of it was spent on cheap Chinese made gee-gaws that further skew the balance of payments with China.  Many folks simply dumped it in savings and the folks that needed it the most put a few tanks of $4 a gallon gas in their cars.

For the same budget cost, we could have rebuilt about 500 of the most dangerous bridges in the country and created jobs for about 25,000 people.  THAT would have made MUCH more sense than this idiotic giveaway did!  It was PURE political pandering from both sides of the aisle.

Giving money away never does much good.  Investing in infrastructure ALWAYS pays handsomely in improvements, jobs, and increased tax revenues from the added numbers of people in the workforce.  Eisenhower did it with the Interstate Highway system.  We need that type of investment in our nation, NOT another handout!
