There will be a next time, says Adam Scott after a meltdown at the British Open
The third major golf championship this year, The Open Championship, featured one of the worst meltdowns by any player in the history of the sport.
Adam Scott from Australia, who led the tournament with a five-stroke margin through 68 holes, bogeyed each of the final four holes and handed over the victory to Ernie Els.
The South African, who won the British Open for the second time in his career, birdied two of his last five holes at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.
The finishing moments of the event were not new to the legendary Nick Faldo, as he himself has a gift of such kind placed in his record too. In 1996, Greg Norman surrendered a six-stroke lead to Faldo during the final round of the US Masters Tournament.
While commentating for a TV channel on Sunday, Faldo said that the losing moments will become a scare of life for the 32-year-old Australian.
On the other hand, Scott did not want to make justifications for his sudden meltdown during the decisive round. Moreover, he believes that there will come many moments in his life when he will have the chance of earning the first major victory of his career.
"Greg was my hero when I was a kid and I thought he was a great role model, how he handled himself in victory and defeat," Scott told reporters.
"He set a good example for us. It's tough, I don't want to sit here and have to justify anything I've done out there. "I didn't finish the tournament well but next time, and I'm sure there will be a next time, I can do a better job of it”.
He also stated that it will be too early to comment on what he plans for the future, as he never experienced such situation in the past.
"It may not have sunk in yet," he said. "Hopefully I can let it go really quick and get ready for my next tournament. I've never really been in this position before so I'll have to wait and see how I feel".
