  1. Eli and Paul are brothers but are played by the same actor, Paul Dano.

Here's my take on the last part of the movie:

Upon hearing that his son would be starting his own oil business in Mexico, Daniel (Daniel Day-Lewis) becomes vicious. He tells his son that he was a b*****d that he found in a basket (which was true) and that there was no part of him in his son. His son leaves by saying "I'm glad there is no part of you in me."

Daniel gets drunk and passes out on his bowling alley. Eli (Paul Dano) comes to see Daniel and wakes him up after much effort. Daniel begins speaking with Eli and is asked about a possible business deal. Daniel makes Eli agree that before he will do the deal Eli must admit that he is a false prophet and that God is a superstition. Eli agrees and does so because he was a false prophet. He was only in it because it gave him prestige in the village and business leverage. Eli was an extremely bad character because of the way he treated his family with his leverage as a healer and the way he treated Daniel; humiliating him in front of his congregation.

After this, Daniel becomes enraged over a comment Eli makes. He chases him around the bowling alley, throwing pins at him. Daniel hits Eli with a pin, knocking him down. He then strikes Eli's head twice with the pin, crushing it. Daniel lies in the pool of blood as his butler walks in. Daniel's final words are "I'm finished!"

All of Daniel's dreams and lusts are finished.

He is finally guilty of something that he knows will end his life

  2. I've watched that film several times and I want to say that Eli and Paul are brothers and not the same person.  Paul was eager to give away his family's land for some quick cash while Eli had more of a religious and familial attachment to it.

And at the end, Daniel Plainview was not a true believer in religion (except for that one part of regret for sending his adopted son away -- and even then he felt tricked by the church), and he felt that Eli's Christian beliefs were all hypocritical.  That's why he always picked on Eli -- Daniel felt that Man made his way in the universe, not God, the way Eli felt.

At the very end, Daniel found he was right about Eli being a hypocrite when the young preacher finally gave in and came to the millionaire for financial help, explaining that he made bad decisions and had sinned.

Daniel then began to taunt and tease and torment Eli until he finally had enough and in a fit of fury, pick up the bowling pin and end it.

  3. That movie is ******* up man.
