Theresa Cliff-Ryan wins Women’s Kugler Open at 2011 Tour of Somerville: Cycling News
Colavita and Forno d'Asolo team’s Theresa Cliff-Ryan showed her tremendous performance in Women Kugler Open at the 2011 Tour of Somerville on Monday, May 30.
The race started in North Bridge and ended at Main Street, Somerville. The 32-year-old, Theresa Cliff took a total of 47 minutes and 54.6 seconds to cover the distance of 32.2 kilometres.
Colavita and Forno D’Asolo DS Rachel Heal told the media, "It was an important race for us because Colavita is from New Jersey, and John Profaci [Vice President of Colavita, USA] was around today watching the race."
Three-time Tour of Somerville Champion, Laura Van Gilder of Mellow Mushroom team, was in the second spot.
Lenore Pipes of the Guam National team was in the third place. Giorgia Bronzini, Christine Fennessy and Barbara Guarashi were in the fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Despite of not being an added event in the National Racing Calendar (NRC), the women's cycling event gathered an audience, which was almost equal to that of other competitive cycling events, offering highly challenging races for the Pro-Category 1, 2 and
3 and with a grid comprising of 50 cyclists.
The four-corner circuit of the event commenced from the West Main Street concluding with a 500 metres drag to the crossing line.
All riders displayed good result in the race including, Laura Van Gilder along with Kacey Manderfield of the Pure Energy Cycle team, Christine Fennessy of the South Mountain Cycles team, Colleen Gulick of the Kenda team.
A group of four break-away riders Theresa Cliff-Ryan, Barbara Guarashi, Lenore Pipes and Laura Van Gilder made their first break.
In the final kilometres of the race, the peloton set up a bunch sprint and with the help of Colavita and Forno D’Asolo team, Theresa crossed the finish-line, ahead of the other cyclists without any difficulty.
Heal further added, "Theresa and Giorgia were swapping things around to try and not make it obvious what they were doing, Giorgia wore her world champion’s jersey and the race organizers were happy to have her there because it was the first time the race
had a world champion compete."
Recently, Theresa grabbed a third spot in Pan American Championships, road race. She won the second stage of Redlands Bicycle Classic and also grabbed the third place in Liberty Classic race in 2010.
Lauren Shirock of the WBI Funds Cycling team, tried her best to cross the other riders, but failed to so and grabbed the 27th place in the stage.
