Therese Alshammar captures Women’s 50m butterfly heat: Day six – 2011 FINA World Championships
Swedish athlete, Therese Alshammar, impressed the arena on day six of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Friday, July 29. The session of the championships carried out the Women’s 50m butterfly meet, in which Therese Alshammar topped
the race with a winning time of 25.68 seconds.
After the impressive splash in the respective meet, Alshammar is now the hot favourite to win the 50m butterfly battle.
Last time, Alshammar won the gold medal in the subsequent heat at the 2010 edition of the championships, in Dubai. More importantly, she clinched four gold medals at the 2000 and 2002 editions of the meet, in Athens and Moscow, respectively.
She has never won the gold medal in the Olympics, but she looks really confident and determined to notch her first ever Olympic gold medal in the next year Games, in London. Last time, Alshammar nabbed two silver and one bronze medal at the 2000 edition
of the Olympics, in Sydney.
In the meantime, Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark wound up second in a time of 25.88 seconds and Dana Vollmer of United States of America claimed third spot with a time of 25.98 seconds.
Ying Lu of China wound up fourth in a time of 26.16 seconds. After the race, Lu said, “I have no pressure on me here, because it is my first major international competition," Lu said. "I am treating the world championships as a learning experience. Of course,
everyone wants to medal though.”
Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden finished fifth in a time of 26.17 seconds and Christine Magnuson of United States settled sixth in a time of 26.20 seconds. Inge Dekker of Netherlands wound up seventh in 26.32 seconds.
Melanie Henique of France and Yuka Kato of Japan grabbed the eighth spot in a time of 26.37 seconds. Trin Aljand and Li Tao finished tenth in 26.43 seconds. Marleen Veldhuis of Netherlands grabbed the twelfth spot in the respective meet after she touched
the finishing wall in a time of 26.50 seconds.
