Therese Alshammar impresses in Berlin: 2011 FINA World Cup
Olympic medallist, Therese Alshammar of Sweden impressed Berlin’s crowd with her wonderful swimming effort in the butterfly final heat on day two of the 2011 FINA World Cup series in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday, October 23. Alshammar clinched the Women’s
50m butterfly title on the respective day.
The twelve-time world champion and twenty-five time European champion, Alshammar was up against one of her strongest rivals, world and European champion, Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark and Dorothea Brandt of Germany in the final heat.
Therese got off to an amazing start in the final race and left both swimmers way behind by touching the finishing wall in a nerve wrecking mark of 25.18 seconds to win Women’s 50m butterfly title.
Alshammar bagged three Olympic medals in the category of 50m, 100m and 4x100m freestyle events at the 2000 Olympic Games, in Sydney. Recently, she won gold medal in 50m freestyle at the 2011 World Championships edition, in Shanghai.
In the meantime, Jeanette Ottesen did not lose her confidence and went on to clinch the silver title in the 50m freestyle race by beating her competitor, Dorothea Brandt, with a winning mark of 25.50 seconds. The bronze title went to Brandt in an impressive
time of 26.35 seconds.
Some other interesting swims were observed as Great Britain’s Amy Smith went on to attain the fourth spot in the respective race by thrashing the finishing wall in a spot of 26.67 seconds. Meanwhile, Kimberly Buys of Belgium put up an impressive swim in
front of the packed crowd and earned fifth place honours by submitting a respectable time of 26.71 seconds.
Additionally, the swim of Russian athlete, Maria Ugolkova secured her the sixth position in the respective race by submitting a time of 26.87 seconds. Moreover, the effort of Slovakian swimmer, Katarina Listopadova helped her clinch the seventh spot in a
time of 26.94 seconds. Last, but not the least, the eighth position went to Sina Sutter of Colombia in an appreciating mark of 27.01 seconds.
The wonderful efforts of Swedish athlete, Therese Alshammar were outstanding in the event, while the winners were awarded prizes and accolades for their performances after the session’s completion.
