Therese Alshammar secures Women’s 100m butterfly gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Therese Alshammar of Sweden secured gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on day one of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, October 13.
The Swedish swimmer devastated hopes of her opponents in the four-lap butterfly discipline and sprinted her way towards the wall for the title.
With her unrelenting efforts, Alshammar remained in a significant lead over her opponents and transpired on the finishing end for gold medal with a phenomenal effort of 56.68 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Ingvild Snildal of Norway, who stayed 1.30 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 57.98 seconds.
Snildal was traced by Emilia Pikarainen of Finland, who stayed 0.50 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and emerged on the finishing end as third best finisher by clocking an effort of 58.48 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Inge Dekker of Netherlands, who stayed 0.29 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall as fourth best finisher by clocking an effort of 58.77 seconds.
Dekker faced tough battle from her closest competitor Martina Granstrom of Sweden but succeeded in overpowering her over the finishing wall. Granstrom suffered a deficit of 0.14 seconds over her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall for fifth position by posting an effort of 58.91 seconds.
Subsequently, Granstrom was followed by Ilaria Bianchi of Italy, who was 0.03 seconds slower from her and settled on the wall as sixth best finisher by submitting a time of 58.94 seconds.
Seventh best spot of the race was obtained by Dandara Antonio of Brazil, who was 0.40 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and appeared on the wall with an effort 59.34 seconds.
Antonio was traced by Kelly De Jong of Netherlands, who stayed more than a body length slower from her former finisher and surfaced on the wall as eighth best finisher with a timing of 1 minute and 00.48 seconds.
Furthermore, Alshammar was contented with her gold finish and stressed that she would try hard to accomplish the same at forthcoming stages of the World Cup.
