Therese Alshammar wins Women’s 50m and 100m butterfly
titles in Canet – Swimming news
Day one of the 2011 Mare Nostrum event got-off to a strong start with the stunning performance of Swedish swimmer, Therese Alshammar in the Women’s 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly swimming events at Canet, in France, June 8.
Initially, Alshammar edged out Russian and Australian swimmers, Veronika Popova and Marieke Guehrer in the Women’s 50m freestyle finals with a sterling time of 24.47 seconds. The win also moved her into the second place in the world rankings. After the respective
meet, Therese was looking completely thrilled with her individual performances in the event.
The Olympic, world and European champion, Ranomi Kromo of Netherlands still does have the record of 24.35 seconds in the Women’s 50m freestyle meet, which she set in 2011.
Popova took home the silver title in the corresponding meet with a victorious time of 25.10 seconds, while Guehrer snared the bronze medal with a time of 25.32 seconds. Meanwhile, two other Australian swimmers, Jessica Morrison and Sophie Edington surprisingly
finished at the sixth and seventh spots with a time of 25.56 and 25.69 seconds, respectively.
In the Women’s 100m butterfly final, Swedish swimmer, Therese again clinched her second gold medal with a sterling time of 58.48 seconds. Martina Granstrom earned the silver title with a time of 59.05 seconds, while the Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Champion,
Jessicah Schipper grabbed bronze with a time of 59.18 seconds in the following event.
Previously, Schipper won two gold medals in the Women’s 4x100m medley finals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing, respectively. She also claimed nine gold medals at the World Championships consistently during the period of 2003-2009.
She won two silver medals in the Women’s 50m and 100m freestyle finals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Besides, she has won many gold medals in both the World and European Championships.
Currently, Therese’s ultimate goal of life is to win her first ever Olympic gold medal at the upcoming Olympic Games in London, 2012. Given the current form she is in, the swimmer is looking good to elevate her game in future events.
