Therese Alshammar wins Women’s 50m freestyle gold medal: Day eight – 2011 FINA World Championships
Therese Alshammar of Sweden earned the gold medal of Women’s 50m freestyle meet on the final day of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) scheduled 2011World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Alshammar clinched the title of the 50m event, by submitting a marvellous effort of 24.14 seconds. She was just 0.41 seconds slower than improving the world record of 23.73 seconds, set by German swimmer, Britta Steffen at the 2009 World Championships.
The champion was 0.13 seconds away from her following swimmer, Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Netherlands, who followed her on the victory stand for the silver medal, by reporting in a time of 24.27 seconds. Kromowidjojo was followed by her team-member and closest
competitor, Marleen Veldhuis, who remained 0.22 seconds behind her former finisher and posted a third fastest time of 24.49 seconds for the bronze medal.
The fourth position of the event was secured by Francesca Halsall of Great Britain, who was only 0.11 seconds slower from the bronze medallist and concluded her swim in a time of 24.60 seconds. In the meantime, Bulgaria’s Aliaksandra Herasimenia emerged
on the finishing wall for the fifth finest spot of the race. Herasimenia was just 0.05 seconds slower than her preceding finisher and clocked a time of 24.65 seconds.
Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark was the sixth fastest swimmer of the event, as she remained only 0.02 seconds behind the fifth position holder and produced an effort of 24.67 seconds. Ottesen was trailed by her subsequent swimmer, Arianna Vanderpool Wallace
of Bahamas, who was 0.12 seconds behind her previous swimmer and posted a seventh fastest time of 24.79 seconds. Similarly, Jessica Hardy of USA was also 0.08 seconds behind the seventh finest finisher and submitted a time of 24.87 seconds for eighth position.
Alshammar expressed happiness over her gold winning effort in the freestyle event, whereas, she also articulated her desire of continuing with the same performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Furthermore, the winners of the shorter distance event collected
medals and accolades after the completion of the session.
