Therese Alshammar wins Women’s 50m freestyle race: Day seven – 2011 FINA World Championships
Day seven of the 2011 FINA World Championships produced several impressive swims in the preliminary heats in Shanghai, China, on Saturday, July 30.
The session of the championship conducted several races, where Therese Alshammar of Sweden snared the Women’s 50m freestyle heat, while Jessica Hardy of United States won the Women’s 50m breast-stroke preliminary race. Gerhard Zandberg of Russia captured
the Men’s 50m back-stroke heat, whereas, United States snagged the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay preliminary heat.
Alshammar and Jessica Hardy hit the finishing wall in 24.82 seconds to share the Women’s 50m freestyle preliminary heat. In the meantime, Aliaksandra Herasimenia rounded out the top three in 24.85 seconds and Dorothea Brandt of Germany finished fourth in
a time of 24.86 seconds. Marleen Veldhuis of Netherlands settled fifth in 25.01 seconds.
In the Women’s 50m breast-stroke preliminary heat, Jessica Hardy earned the top spot in a scintillating time of 30.20 seconds. After the race, Hardy said, “I am really happy, and excited about tonight. I am definitely hoping for a good time in the breaststroke.
This time made the top 16, which was the goal this morning.”
Yuliya Efimova of Russia and Rebecca Soni of United States settled in a tie for second place with a time of 30.72 seconds. Meanwhile, Jennie Johansson of Sweden earned fourth place honours in 30.89 seconds and Leisel Jones of Australia finished fifth in
a time of 30.93 seconds.
The Men’s 50m back-stroke preliminary heat was captured by Russia’s Gerhard Zandberg with an impressive time of 24.72 seconds. Camille Lacourt of France wound up second in 25.03 seconds, while Helge Meeuw of Germany was placed third in 25.04 seconds. Flori
Lang settled fourth in a time of 25.12 seconds.
Four swimmers from United States, Elizabeth Pelton, Rebecca Soni, Chiristine Magnuson and Amanda Weir won the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay prelims with a winning time of 3 minutes and 56.95 seconds. Russia earned second place with a time of 3 minutes and
59.08 seconds, while China grabbed third spot in 3 minutes and 59.44 seconds.
