Therese Alshammar wins fourteenth gold title of the FINA World Cup series in Tokyo
Olympic medallist, Therese Alshammar of Sweden demolished her rivals during the final round of the 2011 FINA World Cup series in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday, November 12. Alshammar claimed the Women’s 100m butterfly title.
Therese was up against two strong rivals including Pac Pacific medallist, Yuka Katou of Japan and Olympic gold medallist, Lisbeth Trickett of Australia in the final race, as Alshammar got off to a strong start in the pool and produced thrilling turns by
banging the finishing blockade in a breathtaking mark of 55.95 seconds to win the 100m butterfly title.
More importantly, Alshammar claimed her fourteenth gold title of the current World Series. Earlier, she had been named as the silver medallist in 50m and 100m freestyle events at the 2000 Olympic Games, in Sydney.
After the race, Katou settled for silver medal in a time of 56.37 seconds. She grabbed bronze medal in 4x100m IM at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, in Irvine. In the meantime, the bronze title went to Australian swimmer, Lisbeth Trickett in a winning
time of 58.23 seconds.
Trickett was the gold titlist in 4x100m freestyle at the 2004 Olympic Games, in Athens. In addition, she clinched two gold medals in 100m butterfly and 4x100m IM meets at the 2008 Olympic editions, in Beijing. Moreover, she won five gold medals during the
2006 Commonwealth Games, in Melbourne.
In the meantime, Martina Granstroem did not lose her confidence in the pool against her competitors and earned fourth position by smacking the finishing barrier in a blot of 58.33 seconds. Additionally, the fifth spot went to Natsumi Hoshi of Japan in a
time of 58.70 seconds.
Finally, three Japanese swimmers settled at top-eight positions including Chika Dobashi in a time of 58.92 seconds, Miho Teramura in a mark of 59.00 seconds and Hiroko Sugino in a spot of 59.51 seconds, respectively. Owing to her thrilling swim in the pool,
Swedish veteran, Therese Alshammar was awarded with gold title along with a cash prize after the end of the session.
The 2011 FINA World Cup series is scheduled to close in Tokyo, on Sunday, November 13.
