What are two ways thermal energy does work?

automobile. The gasoline explodes in the cylinder as chemical energy is converted to thermal/kinetic energy. The force of the expanding gas pushes against the piston, changing the thermal/kinetic energy to mechanical energy, which makes the wheels turn.

A coal burning power plant. Coal burns, as chemical energy is converted to thermal/kinetic energy. This is applied to water, changing it to steam. The  thermal/kinetic energy of the steam is converted to mechanical energy in a steam turbine, which turns a generator and generates electrical energy.
