Question:

Thermostat trouble?

Okay, well yesterday was my first time turning on the thermostat at home all spring/summer season (it's not a digital one). I went to turn it on and it works fine. I had it on for like an hour and it was only blowing warm/hot air.

What does this mean?

Thanks for all of your help.

  1. It depends what kind of system that the thermostat is connected to.

Do you mean air conditioning, central heating etc.

If you mean air conditioning it may need repairing and re-gassing due to a leak. It may be that there is a fault in one of the components. It is less likely to be a thermostat fault as they tend to be one of the most reliable components.

  2. That it is either out of freeon or it is broken.

  3. On the newer units, (within the past 10 years), there is a control relay on the main AC board, (located in the unit inside), that controls the compressor, (located outside).  Check the compressor unit to see if the fan is running.  If not, the control board may be bad.  Sometimes you can cycle the thermostat to off, wait a few minutes, then switch to on to restart the compressor.  If the compressor fan is running, check the two copper lines coming out of the bottom of the unit,  one should feel cold and with condensate, and the other should feel warm.  If the fan is running and the lines do not feel this way, you may have a bad relay or compressor in the outside unit.

Another thing to check, there is a wire pair, usually strapped to one of the cooling lines, that controls the compressor unit.  Check to see if it is intact.   Many have been damaged by weed eaters.

  4. if it worked fine and then after an hour blew hot it sounds like your condenser coils are icing up.  you probably have an accumulation of dust/dirt on the coils that is leading to the formation of ice, blocking the air flow cooling.  turn the system off for a couple of hours, clean off the coils, start it back up.  if it cools at first then it was icing.  if it staysd hot from the get-go after restart, it is something else.
