Question:

These designer dogs are getting out of hand?

I was just looking at different dogs stuff and I found this site. I had no idea how many designer dog breeds were out there. Check out this list . I wouldn't ever buy one from a breeder but if you look on there you could find a mix type you like and go on petfinder or go to your local shelter and rescue one. What do you all think?

  1. Yes, I agree that the designer dog buisiness is getting out of control. However, people must be made aware that there are many, many BYB's of purebred dogs as well. Just because someone breeds purebred dogs it does not instantly make them an ethical and responsible breeder. Just because someone breeds hybrids it does not automatically mean the dogs are neglected and raised in a dirty home.

tigress0 mentioned that she gets upset when she sees that hybrid dogs are selling for more money than her purebreds. I feel that many purbred breeders are upset by this but they really need to just ride out this trend. Mutts will forever be popular but once 'everyone' has a desinger dog and purebreds are more 'rare' then there will be more demand once again for purebreds. In the meantime, purebred breeders should take their own advice that they dish out to many other people and stop breeding their dogs. At the moment it is hybrids who are re-homed from shelters much faster than purebreds because of their popularity. And there are lots of purebreds in the shelter. If you can't easily find homes for your puppies purebred or not or are unsatisfied with the amount of money you can ask for them then simply do not breed your dog. A dog is a dog is a dog. Purebred or not, It's just one more dog that may end up in a shelter.

And also Tigress0- while I do not completely disagree with what you are saying- - reputable breeders almost never breed two different types of dogs. Do you show both bassets and poms??? I could hardly see this being possible unless you are not a serious competitor since showing is very time consuming and expensive and it's hard enough to focus on only one breed. Also, do you health check both your breeds by a vet for genetic disorders or do you just assume that you have bred out all possible ailments as that is what it sounds like. And how long have you been breeding? To claim that you have almost completely bred out health problems in your lines sounds like BS. Do you line breed every breeding? Because if you outbreed at all how could you possibly make this claim. A reputable breeder makes potential buyers aware of certain health problems their breed is prone to and breeds dogs that have cleared health checks for these problems so they are less likely to produce unhealthy puppies.  But a good breeder would not have claimed to have basically eradicated these illnesses. This would take much longer than your lifetime of breeding  to even get close to doing this. Breeding dogs that are completely free of all health problems is pretty much impossible. You sound like a breeder who thinks that just because your dogs are purebred that you are better than a hybrid breeder. There are some hybrid breeders out there who are fantastic and health check and really care about their dogs. But many don't. Same for purebred breeders. Very few are actually good breeders. Purebred breeders with quality stock would not worry themselves about designer dogs or about puppy prices. My advice is not to just jump on the purebred bandwagon and blindly pimp for purebreds. If you really care about dogs the real concern should be "who" is breeding and not "what'" is being bred.

I am a purebred breeder of Italian Mastiffs.

  2. They certainly are!

  3. Not a designer breeds but designer Mutts why encourage them?

  4. I like how they have a picture of the designer dogs on the page, as if all of them end up looking like that. :] As if they are bred to some sort of standard.

  5. It really makes no sense that people are paying for mutts like they are pure breed dogs!

  6. Tell me about it. The puppy mills and BYB are making big $$$$$  off these dogs..

    EDIT>

As long as there are people out there that want those type of dogs these people will be in business. Supply and demand

    EDIT>

I have been in the pet business for 21 years now and I have seen the mix breed go up allot not just the oops my poodle got my Shih tzu these types of dogs have become very popular the Yorkie poo shih tzu poo the Maltese poo the pom a poo peakapoo, People are breeding toy breeds with poodle and calling them these fancy names now it has gone to the larger breeds Lab poodle. TV and the media have not helped this over population of mix breeds. Think about it any time something becomes popular there are people that are going to want to be a part of that. So this means purposely breeding of Pug Beagles Boston Pug when before it was an oops. I am seeing more and more of these so called designer dogs and what people are paying for a mix breed. You don't think there are people that are going take that and run with it there are greedy people out there that want a part of the money so greed takes over. People have this fascination with the designer dog and the puppy mills and BYB know this. Like I said supply and demand keeps these nasty people in business. Go to a pet store you will see more mix breed the pure why the fascination. There are people that want in on this.

  7. HOLY ****!!! i WOULD LIKE TO POUND ONE OF THOSE BREEDERS!!

  8. I won't even get into the whole "designer dog" thing.  I breed basset hounds and pomeraninas and when I see mutts for sale for much more than I am selling my purebred dogs for it drives me crazy.  Someone said supply and demand.  You are exactly right, and I guess it is their right to make money, but we are talking about living beings.  And if the only reason you are breeding these mutts is to make $$$ then it is for totally the wrong reason.  One thing I hear over and over again is that the "designer" or "hybrids" are healthier because they get the best genes from both breeds.  That is a load of #^$^@  Whats to say they don't get the worst from each breed.  I can tell you exactly what genetic disorders are associated with my breeds and what to look for, also I guarantee my dogs free from genetic problems or I will replace the dog or you get your money back.  How can I do that?  Because I have been breeding for a long time and I have virtually bred out genetic defects in my lines because I have been very picky about who and what I breed.  I don't just throw any old dogs together to make cute "designer" or "hybred" dogs that I can sell for big bucks!!!  Another problem I have is if you want a mutt, go to your local shelter or rescue to get a dog.  There are already hundreds of dogs of all breeds that are euthanized every day.  OK, I'll stop for now and get down off my soapbox.
