  1. Yes I agree with the answer above. A good tip is to start with a question, like, "why was the Battle significant?" for example. As you progress in your research ask more questions. Finally pick a question and your answer will be your thesis statement. "The Battle was significant because..."

  2. "A battle where the Greeks place their difference aside and stand together and to fight a common enemy."

    or

"Where the Spartans and other Greeks show the world their uncommon valor, were they hold off the Persian for three days buying time for Themistocles to built a navy and use to defeat the Persian fleet which became the turning point of the war."

  3. You'll want to have a general point that you're trying to get across with the entire paper. The thesis statement should be able to pretty well identify what it is you plan on pointing out. In other words, you want to almost ask a question in a non-question form that the paper itself will thoroughly answer. Make sense?

  4. Several. "While the battle of Thermopolyae has brought the Spartan 300 immortality, history tends to overlook that it failed to significantly slow down the Persian advance, or  save Athens from destruction."

"History is made by individuals. At Thermopylae, that history was made first by Leonidas and his last stand, and by the traitor Eiphalates, who doomed the Spartans and their allies.

" The Spartans and other greeks were able to hold off the Persians because of superior weapons and armor."

Those are a few. It all depends on how long your paper has to be. Ones like the last suggestion are easier to do than some of the others.

  5. How about how the unity of a concentrated, small force of committed men in defense of their families and country can unseat the superior volume of an amalgamated force fighting in foreign waters/on foreign soil in pursuit of their ruler's designs on conquest and retaliation.

That is what they did, and the entire western world is better for it.

They proved that it is not nearly as strategically important to count the dead bodies on your side of the battlefield as it is to inflict terrible losses on the enemy.  You can lose the battle but win the war - while simultaneously motivate the balance of your forces to imitate the same heroic commitment.
