I am working on my master thesis proposal on childhood education. My research question is: What is the function of Spanish-English code switching (CS) during story retelling for first grade bilingual students?

I am having a huge problem defining two sub-questions. My advisor keeps pressing that the questions need to explore the ‘function’ but to be frank I’m so overwhelmed by not getting it that we are both getting frustrated.

All I want to know is how students are using code switching, that is alternating between languages. Is it for comprehension reasons? Fluency issues? Are they switching for specific parts of sentence such as action verbs, or not?

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
