  1. john eales-the guy is a legend ,kicks goals and an amazing lock forward for australia

  2. I would have to say Nick Farr-Jones.  He was not only a great No9 but an inspirational player and a good leader behind his pack of forwards.  He was a general on the field and could dictate a game from any angle. His positional play was awesome much like Zinzan Brooke.  He was also a points machine and an excellent ambassador for his country and for rugby.  He brought the best out of players - Campo - Lynagh - Little - Roebuck - Eales- Kearnes-

  3. Sean Fitzpatrick

  4. John Eales is my pick.

  5. Big Johnno

The guy was a legend for England. He led the team to the 2003 6 nations Grand Slam beating the Irish at Landsdowne Road and refusing to move off the red carpet so the Irish President could get by him. Hehe she didn't like that one bit.

Always talking, always telling his men what he wanted from them, as the 03 final went into extra time he told them 'Leave nothing'.

He made the final surge and gained vital yards to make Jonnys drop goal a bit easier.

    True English legend

  6. The mighty Martin Johnson.  Not only is he the best player compared to the other captains, but leads from the rear. Directional, supportive, powerful whilst being softly spoken yet highly influential & well respected by his team & peers. Best off all, magnanimus in victory!

  7. David Kirk. The cut from the eye, the little guy lifting the cup in his final All Black match, unquestioning dominance of the All Blacks as the best team in the competition and the world. At any of the other world cups has the winner been the unquestionable best team in the world?

Plus, Captain Kirk. come on it was meant to be!

  8. John Eales because he was a great thinker of the game

  9. Martin Johnson, he took an England side that were under dogs and not expected to get any where near the world cup final, and lead them to world cup victory.

  10. I can only admire Tree Ox's answer and agree more or less with the others - it's a tough call.

One thing is for certain though and that is the fact that Will Carling is the worst captain in World Cup history given that he changed the game plan against Australia in 91 and starting flinging the ball around only to end up with egg on his face.

  11. Given the wider implications of their victory, I'd be tempted to say Pienaar. If I was simply picking the best player, I'd say Eales, and if I was picking the best leader I'd go for Johnson.

  12. I'd choose Francois Pienaar, mainly because he was able to cleverly use the RWC victory euphoria to help build a fledgling nation. As a player, I'd have to go for Martin Johnson as he was the real driving force behind England's RWC victory 4 years ago.

  13. Eales unfortunately - If Umaga had played and captained the AB side in this RWC, I would think he would be not only the best captain but also have seen that NZ go all the way to the finals and win it!

  14. Kirky!.

  15. I would have to say Martin Johnson!

The way he inspired and directed his players during the 2003 RWC was awesome!

The team seemed to slump when he retired!
