Question:

They CAN'T be all females!?

I caught all the 3-week-old and 2-week old Platy fry in my tank, and examined them one by one with a magnifier, in a plastic cup. I saw a fully flared lower rear fin on every one of them, like on a female.

I can not believe 12 out of 12 are females.

Anyone know how old they'll be when they become identifiable (reliably) as males or females?

  1. About 4-6 weeks old, you will be able to tell. The fish babies usually all have the back tail, but will disappear with age depending on the gender.  If you notice no change, some will take 8 weeks. Otherwise, you amy have a feminine group

  2. remmember that you cant determine boys develope late so your girls may turn into boys

  3. lol..if the anal fin looks like a fan then u got females..the males have a gonopodium like sharks do..heres some pics for an example

  4. The males don't develop the gonopodium until they are mature at 4 to 5 months.  The young fry all look like females.  Same with all of the livebearers.

  5. They all look like females in the beginning.. Males develop later than females so soon some of your females will probably turn into males..

    Good luck!!
