I currently work at a hat store in the mall. I worked there for a year n a 1/2 We have a small staff of 4 employees. Recently a lot of hats have come up missing. The manager questioned me, n I told him who I thought it was, the assistant manager. I thought it was was him cuz he was leaving at the end of last month n his work habbits really changed in that time. Only problem is since he left, there's been more hat missing its definetly not me, not the new assistant manager, probably not the manager so that leaves 1 person the sales associate... n he can't work alone so they ruled him out. So now that leaves me :( , n I have never stolen ne thing from there. Yesterday the district manager came n interviewed/ investegated me. She took my ss# n everything. The new assistant manager is my friend, so he called me late last nite n told me while I was being "interviewed" the manager called n said I was being fired, only thing is the district manager didn't think it was me so she didn't fire me. Now I'm in a situation, n sooner or later if the hats don't stop missing (which I dounbt there going 2) I'm going 2 be fired. I worked really hard 2 keep a good work history n dont want 2 get fired over something I didn't do ....Steal, which would make it harder for me 2 get a different job. Should I quit? Only thing is if I quit will it make it look more suspicious like its me??? What's should I do?

  1. Tell them to prove you stole the merchandise or leave you alone.  Get an attorney and be ready to file a lawsuit against the employer and anyone who accused you of stealing.

  2. own up we have it on tape!

  3. take a olygraph (lie detactor) test or tell them they are aracis and f off

  4. See how it goes, if u get fired and then hats keep going missing they're gonna be certain it wasn't you and they will re-employ you hopefully. :D

    So just see what happens.

  5. leave sod em get a better job

  6. Don't quit.  Tell them that if they continue to unfairly accuse you of theft you're going to sue the company.  They have no right to be investigating you like that - unless they have solid proof, which they obviously don't since you didn't steal anything, they are harassing you and breaking the law.  Your potential to get future jobs, your reputation, and your criminal history are needlessly at stake here!

And by the way, don't assume it's not the store manager who's doing the stealing and trying to blame someone else - from what you've said above it seems likely!

    Good luck with everything.

  7. I would quit but be honest about why you are quiting.  Tell them that you understand they are trying to catch whoever is taking the hats but you have already told them it isn't you and clearly they don't believe you.  Say: "why would I want to work somewhere where there is so little trust?"

Plus this way, when you leave they will know it isn't you because the hats will still go missing.  Then you could find a new job, because why would you want to work someplace like that anyway?!

The thing that confuses me about this situation is that most stores have security cameras for just this type of thing.  You could suggest they install some.

  8. When they accused you, did they really spell thief that way?

  9. You do not leave. You should stay and do your work and not give a fly in what others might think because you know that you haven't done anything wrong, so you shouldn't leave. In the meantime, until the person is caught, you try and do you job in the eyes of any of the other three workers so they will be able to see if you were stealing or not; which you are not stealing, of course. What ever you do, don't leave until the situation stops and wait a bit before you quit (if you want to quit after that).

  10. that is so unfair.

I am surprized they don't have a video recorder in your shop.

    That would solve the problem.

If I understand the problem right, it seems to me that the manager is the one doing the stealing, either alone or with friends that come into the shop.

Hard to prove anyone at fault without a witness.

It seems for some reason the manager has it in for you, start looking for another job but unless they can prove you did something wrong, I would file a claim of some sort against them.

Perhaps you can talk to someone at the labor board for more advice.

    good luck.

  11. Don't quit, it makes you look guilty.

Offer to take a lie detector test.

If they fire you without proof, you can get unemployment and also you have grounds for a law suit if you choose.

Can you have a heart to heart with the manager?  Talk to him/her about how you feel?

you learned a valuable lesson....dont accuse/blame someone. Putting blame on the asst. manager without knowing that he/she did it was not fair and now you know how it feels.   That was wrong for you to guess who was stealing them.  We should never accuse someone of doing something unless we are sure they did it.

Could a regular customer be stealing the hats?
