My brother, aged 30. Financially stable was denied adopting any kid cause he is single. I know of a few single female that adopted but does anyone know of any law that prevents a single male from adopting? He lives in California.

  1. no, that would be false unless he was going through a specific agency....Agencies can make their own rules, but through foster care he can adopt.

  2. That is strange. It depends on what agency he goes to. Some agencies are really religious based and will not adopt to g**s, singles, etc.  He should try Independent Adoption Agency. They have a few different locations he could go to. I used them and loved them.  They will adopt to single men.  Here is their website.   www.adoptionhelp.org

  3. There may not be laws against it (I don't know), but unless your brother is independently wealthy, he shouldn't adopt.  It's got nothing to do with his being a man.  Adoptees need lots of love and attention, and beings that their lives are starting out with abandonment, you don't want to abandon them every day all over again for work.  It's just not fair to them.  Your brother should wait until he is in a life-long relationship to consider adopting (again, unless he's independently wealthy and doesn't have to work), and in the meantime, he can be a mentor via the Girls and Boys Club, Big Brothers, or some other program.

  4. I don't know if he's trying to adopt through an agency or through the state (foster care).  He can go here, though: http://www.dss.cahwnet.gov/cfsweb/PG1302... to get the scoop about adopting through the state.  If it's an agency adoption, he should look around for an agency that will work with a single man.

  6. It is likely the policy of the adoption agency or foster agency.  He should check with another agency.

  7. I am sure after the few cases when  single men abused their adopted child sexually many agencies toughed up the adoption for the single men.

One can not blame them. They do the right thing.

  8. Its probably the agency. Tell him to try foster care or another agency.

I don't get why he would be denied because many couples that do adopt are doing so because they are trying to keep their marriage together and adopting a child for the sake of child is not their main priority.  On the other hand there are many single women that are adopting because they are so obese and unattractive that they have difficulty finding someone compatible to settle down with.   I know this sounds harsh but these are facts many don't want to look at. I wouldn't want to see a child placed in a home with anyone that doesn't care enough to even take care of themselves.

I think financial stability should be a factor but whats more important is he a loving person that is a good role model and would provide a wholesome home for a child that needs it.

  9. Foster to adoption would be the best route for him to go. I know in Texas they allow single people to foster, and if you take the route of foster to adopt and you have a child in your care who is in-route to adoption (lots of paperwork, waiting for parents to terminate rights) and when the child comes up for adoption, they ask the foster parent (s) first.....no matter what, before they can officially adopt, the child has to be in their home for 6 months.

At least fostering you'll get to know the child before you officially adopt, if you are only adoption, you don't even get to meet the child before you say yes.

  10. Single men are allowed to adopt in the states, however it depends on what agency he is trying to adopt from. I would suggest he check out other agencies or even adopt from the FCS.  If he has the money to consider IA , Brazil is one of the few countries that allows single men and woman to adopt.

  11. yeah the agency makes rules and a lot of the time they will not give a single man a child nor a single women...most want kids to go to married couples
