They were not hurt enough: Gavaskar critiques Indian team’s attitude – Cricket News Update
Former Indian opener and captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
The Men In Blue only recently wrapped up what proved to be a disastrous tour Down Under. After their 0-3 whitewash at the hands of the host team in the Test leg of the tour, it was a downhill slide for the visitors from the subcontinent.
The Commonwealth Bank series saw the Indian team struggling to keep up in the competition. They managed to win only 3 of the 8 matches they played, and while a slight improvement in the team was observed in the last match they played against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 at
Hobart (which they won by 7 wickets), it was not enough to secure them a place in the finals of the series.
Despite their humiliating defeats, however, Gavaskar observed that the team seemed far from remorseful, or angry.
“There were occasions when it looked like they were not hurt enough,” he said.
He went on to cite a few examples. Singling out http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978 off one of his own deliveries during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and reacted to
the incident by smiling. The Aussie skipper then went on to score a triple century.
He also referred to fast-bowler http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Umesh-Yadav-c94625, who also missed a caught-and-bowled chance in the last Test of the series – his reaction to the missed opportunity was also a smile.
“When they get through an achievement like a fifty, hundred or a wicket they snarl, snap and swear but when they drop a catch, they smile... it should be the other way round. It's very hard to understand the psyche of the Indian cricket team,” Gavaskar observed,
adding that the frustration and anger at their own below average performances seemed to be missing in the players.
In addition to their attitude, the national side has a lot of issues to deal with, most pressing among these the need to work on evaluating and improving their performance, settling the rumoured rifts between players in the squad, and settling in with the
newly-appointed vice-captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737. The Men In Blue have their next chance to make a return to form in the upcoming Asia Cup, which is due to kick off on March 11.
