Thiago Alves: A wrong piece of advice cost me the whole Martin Kampmann bout – UFC News
Thiago Alves, the former UFC welterweight champion, in a short interview revealed that he has fired one of his corner man whose bad advice cost him the bout against Martin Kampmann adding that he was on the top of the game when a wrong piece of advice in
the final pivotal moments changed his definite win into an unexpected loss.
Alves and Martin met in the octagon at UFC on FX and headlined the pay-per-view. The three-round bout mesmerised the whole crowd and till the end of the last round proved to be an epic encounter between two of the best welterweights.
Thiago lost that bout in an unanticipated way and literally got raged at the disappointing loss. The 28-year-old Brazilian was pounding Martin throughout the skirmish. Martin, the 29-year-old American threw everything he had in his arsenal but Alves countered
Kampmann’s each and every move successfully.
Martin is best known for his submission tactics whereas Alves is a knockout specialist. Therefore it was evident that Martin will strive hard to make Alves submit. Everything was going fine when during the last few seconds of the last round - one of Thiago’s
associate shouted for a takedown, an act later on dubbed as a blunder by Thiago.
In his recent short interview, Alves was pretty gloomy at the mistake he committed and admitted that he should have analysed the scenario personally rather than following his corner man’s advice bluntly.
Thiago, who has won 19 of his total 24 bouts, while sharing his views said, “I didn't know how bad [Kampmann] was hurt. When you’re fighting, you’re in the zone. You just react to stuff, and my cornerman was like, ‘Takedown, takedown, takedown.’ I went for
it and just made a mistake.”
Alves, who relieved his associate from his position for taking care of his own personal interests, said, “At this level, we have to be very precise, and we have to work toward the win. Maybe he wanted me to finish the fight in a safe position. Maybe he wanted
me to finish the fight on the ground so he could take credit for it. But I'm a striker. I've got to trust the people outside the corner. That's what they're there for.”
Thiago commented that he will learn from this tough experience and will try not to repeat the same mistake. Alves is known as one of the best knockout pound-for-pound welterweights who has fought and nailed many big names in his career such as Josh Koscheck,
Matt Hughes, Papy Abedi and others.
