Thiago Camarao and Jack Freestone remain dominant in Round 3 of Burton Toyota Pro – Surfing News
Brazil’s Thiago Camarao and Australia’s Jack Freestone continued their excellent run of form at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle’s Surfest, winning their respective Round 3 (Round of 48) heats at Merewether
Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, March 16.
The successful Round 3 heat served to carry both Camarao and Freestone into the fourth round (Round of 24). Australia’s Mitch Crews and David Vlug also advanced through into the next round after clinching runner-up place in the 11th and 12th
heat of the third round respectively.
With a handsome prize cheque and coveted ASP rating points on offer during the ASP 6-Star event, the surfers were putting in an immense effort to make a solid impact and remain alive in the contention for the event title. The surfing conditions may not have
been ideal, but the level of surfers enabled them to still collect big scores during their four-man battles.
Looking in a formidable form once again, Camarao adjusted exceptionally well to the two-foot waves breaking at the event site during the 11th heat. Locking his first business-wave early in the battle, the Brazilian surfer posted a 6.77 on the
score-board. He continued the momentum to catch his second business-wave to unload a series of exquisite manoeuvres for an 8.67, taking his heat-total to 15.44 points. The score held up until the end to seal the fate of the heat in his favour.
Crews took first runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 13.66 points, which included a 7.33 and 6.33-point wave.
New Zealand’s Richard Christie and Australia’s Shane Holmes rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 9.30 and 6.63 points respectively.
The final heat of Round 3 pitted Freestone against his fellow countryman David Vlug, America’s Nathaniel Curran and Brazil’s Alan Jhones.
Freestone had been having an excellent run of form which continued on day 5 of the competition. He went through a series of average-scores before posting a 7.23 on the score-board. He backed it up with a 7.40-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.63
points.
Vlug took runner-up place with a heat-total of 12.30 points, which included a 6.50 and 5.80-point wave, to advance through into the next round.
Curran and Jhones got eliminated from the competition after scoring a heat-total of 11.80 and 11.43 points respectively.
