Thiago Camarao powers into Round 2 on day 2 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
Brazil’s Thiago Camarao advanced through into the second round (Round of 48) of the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after walking away with top honours from the 22nd heat of the first round (Round of 96) that went down at the point-break of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 23.
America’s Nathan Yeomans made a second-place finish to successfully extend his life in the competition as well. Brazil’s Jeronimo Vargas finished in third place, while Australia’s Yadin Nicol rounded out the fourth position. Both the surfers had to leave the competition field following their bottom-two finish in the heat.
With a prize purse amount to $US 250,000 as well as an opportunity to earn up to 850 coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points, there was plenty of motivation for the top surfers from around the globe to stretch beyond their limits at the fourth event on the 2012 ASP PRIME calendar. The ideal surfing conditions on hand further contributed to the excitement and expectations from the event, with the perfect four-to-six foot swells on offer at Itauna Beach on Wednesday morning serving as an ideal canvas for the surfers to display their stylish skills.
The 22nd heat of Round 1 saw Camarao taking on Yeomans, Vargas and Nicol in a four-man battle for a place in the next round.
As the battle got underway, Camarao hardly wasted any time in getting down to business. With the local knowledge of the waves and conditions at his disposal, the Brazilian surfer moved into a position from where he expected to catch the best waves that the sea had to offer. The experience paid off as he successfully caught a 7.33-point ride in the opening minutes of the heat and backed it up with a spectacular 8.00-point wave in the dying minutes of the four-man battle to finish with a heat-total of 15.33 points. The score held up until the end to earn him a comfortable win.
Yeomans kept his head from getting cut off from the competition field by securing runner-up place through a heat-total of 12.40 points, which included a 5.67 and 6.73 points.
Vargas and Nicol finished with a heat-total of 11.93 and 10.40 points respectively, consequently making a premature exit from the latest ASP PRIME event.
