Thiago Pereira Garcia earns Men’s 400m IM gold: Day two – 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy, Brazil
Thiago M V Pereira of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR earned the gold medal of Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) final on the next day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 31, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Pereira proved his dominance for the gold crown by overpowering the efforts of his competitors with an astonishing effort of 4 minutes and 24.61 seconds. His effort was nearly 21 seconds slower than the world record of 4 minutes and 03.84 seconds, held by
Michael Phelps of USA from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In addition, his effort was nearly nine seconds slower than his own championship mark of 4 minutes and 15.26 seconds, set by Pereira during 2009.
The second position of the event was claimed by Pereira’s team-member, Renato Britto Barufi, who remained only 0.91 seconds slower than the champion and clocked a fine time of 4 minutes and 25.52 seconds. Likewise, Barufi managed a lead of 1.61 seconds over
his subsequent swimmer, Diogo Oliveira Yabe of FIAT/MINAS, who posted a third fastest time of 4 minutes and 27.13 seconds for bronze medal.
Pereira demonstrated his gruelling strategy in the first lap, where he gained a prominent lead over Barufi to claim the top of the podium. His stupendous efforts continued and he kept on enhancing his lead over his competitors in each lap of the race. The
gold medallist maintained a lead of approximately five seconds over Barufi throughout the swim, while Barufi accelerated his swim in the final lap but it was too late and he failed to succeed Pereira for the gold medal.
For the fourth position of the event, Thiago Teixeira Simon of UNISANTA remained evident, as he ended his swim in a time of 4 minutes and 28.01 seconds. He was chased by Gabriel Maruyama Ogawa of ECP/SABESP, who remained nearly six seconds behind Simon and
clocked a fifth fastest time of 4 minutes and 34.28 seconds.
Moments later, Gabriel Guerra Pedrao of UNISANTA claimed sixth position of the event, as he posted a time of 4 minutes and 34.91 seconds. The seventh position of the event was gained by Evandro Vinicius Silva of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR, who posted a time of
4 minutes and 35.45 seconds. Finally, Lucas Vinicius Oliveira SILVA of UNISANTA secured eighth spot of the event, as he remained nearly two seconds away from Silva and produced a time of 4 minutes and 37.71 seconds.
The session ended after the immaculate swims of all contestants, while the winners were awarded medals and accolades for their superb swims, after the completion of the session.
