Thiago Pereira clinches Men’s 200m back-stroke gold: Day seven – Pan American Games, Guadalajara
Brazilian swimmer, Thiago Pereira demonstrated his phenomenal efforts in the Men’s 200m back-stroke final to claim the title of event on final day of the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico on Friday, October 21.
Identical to Olympic Games, the Pan American Games are held every fourth year and is one of the major sport events.
The 25-year-old Pereira, who earned second fastest qualification spot demonstrated his breath-taking efforts in the final of the 200m. With his fascinating swim, he not only captured the title of the event, but also lowered the Pan American record.
Unlike the preliminary rounds where he followed the lead of Columbia’s Omar Andres Pinzon, the Brazilian went full throttle after the start of the race. With his noteworthy efforts, he completed his initial-lap of the race in 27.37 seconds to overwhelm Pinzon’s
27.64 seconds effort.
Pereira maintained his lead in second half of the race as he completed his first half in 56.73 seconds against Columbian’s 56.93 seconds effort. Pinzon continued his scintillating efforts in third-lap of the swim as he had his sight affixed on the title.
Despite of his gruelling efforts, the Columbian remained marginally slower than his former swimmer in the third-lap.
Pereira concluded his third round in 1 minute and 26.33 seconds, staying 0.39 seconds ahead of Pinzon’s 1 minute and 26.72 seconds effort. The battle continued in final-lap, where Pereira showed his urgency towards the finishing end and smothered the efforts
of his competitors by making a new championship mark of 1 minute and 57.19 seconds.
He improved his own championship mark of 1 minute and 58.42 seconds, made by Pereira in July 2007. He was trailed by Pinzon, who reached the podium for silver medal, by producing an effort of 1 minute and 58.31 seconds for silver medal. Subsequently, USA’s
Ryan Fitzgerald Murphy proved his eligibility for the third spot as he concluded his swim in a time of 1 minute and 58.50 seconds for bronze medal.
The championship ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the spectators admired tremendous efforts of all position holders in the back-stroke discipline.
