Thiago Pereira earns Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day five – Maria Lenk Trophy, Rio de Janeiro
Thiago Machado Pereira of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM earned gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on fifth day of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, April 28.
Pereira upset his competitors in the two-lap backstroke discipline, as he wasted no time and reached the finishing end first for gold medal.
With his quickest response to the start, Pereira gained a marginal lead over his challengers in the start of the race and subsequently, snared gold medal of the event by submitting a time of 53.86 seconds.
He was followed by Eugene Daisuhe Godsoe of CRF/RJ, who remained 0.71 seconds slower from his former finisher and seized silver medal of the discipline by reporting a time of 54.57 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Daniel Orzechowski of ECP/SABESP, who remained just 0.12 seconds away from upsetting the silver medallist but settled on the finishing end for bronze medal by reporting a time of 54.69 seconds.
Following that, Leonardo Guedes of SC NATACAO proved his mettle for fourth position of the 100m discipline as he tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 55.25 seconds.
Guedes was trailed by Fernando Ernesto Pires Do of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM, who suffered a deficit of just 0.10 seconds from his former finisher and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 55.35 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth position of the event was obtained by Guilherme Augusto Guido of ECP/SABESP, who stayed 0.17 seconds away and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 55.52 seconds.
Guido was trailed by his teammate, Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira, who stayed more than one body length behind and earned seventh best spot of the event by clocking a time of 56.86 seconds.
Eighth position of the 100m event was chased by Leonardo De Deus of CRF/RJ, who completed his race in a time of 57.43 seconds.
In addition, Pereira was delighted with his blistering performance in the 100m event and aroused expectations of his supporters by claiming that he will try to achieve the same in his main event at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
