Thiago and Ferramenta clinch success at the Brazilian Country Quota Playoffs – Volleyball news
The 2012 SWATCH FIVB Moscow Grand Slam started off on Thursday, June 7.
First day of the tournament featured the Country Quota Playoffs and only Brazilin duos competed at the CQs.
In the men’s section, a total of three Brazilian tandems competed for one Qualification berth. The pairing of Thiago Santos Barbosa and Rhooney de Oliveira Ferramenta stood apart from the other two on account of better performance and settled for the next
round of the tournament.
The outside courts near the Victory Park in Moscow, Russia provided the backdrop for the thrilling Playoffs and attracted good number of fans.
Thiago and Ferramenta earned a bye in the first fixture of the day and waited for the next match, which was supposed to bring the winner of second match in competition with them. Harley-Evandro and Santos-Vitor Felipe contested their skills in the second
fixture of the day. The two duos staged a close competition and amused the audience with their wonderful game tactics.
The duo of Harley and Evandro claimed the opening stanza with a lead of two points at 21-19, which encouraged them to make more progress. Nonetheless, Santos-Vitor Felipe resisted in full force and tried to stop the compatriots in the second set. They gave
a good competition to Harley-Evandro but still suffered the loss with the same 2-point ratio (22-20). The match ended in two sets, while Harley-Evandro emerged successful.
With one-victory in hand, Harley-Evandro came into stride with Thiago and Ferramenta. The first set of the match featured some hot action on the centre court. The score soared up with close gaps and tied at the 14-all. Gradually, Thiago-Ferramenta picked
up pace and left the opponents behind. They played fast and finished the opening affair at 21-19. The second set had some sort of symmetry with the previous set. The point-to-point battle continued and eventually the second set ended with identical score of
21-19, which gave the winning status to Thiago and Ferramenta.
“That is because there are so many good Brazilian teams. There is a lot of competition. Look at Ricardo and Cunha, they won the event in Prague, but had to play country quota if they had not received a wildcard here in Moscow. This is how strong Brazil is,”
mentioned Ferramenta in his post-match comments.
Next up, the winning duo of Thiago and Ferramenta is scheduled to play two matches in the qualifying round of the Moscow Grand Slam. If they grab success at the Qualification Tournament, they will further advance to the Main Draw.
The duo is determined to keep the momentum going in the next two matches. Lets’ wait and see what comes up next. Check back for more updates and latest news.
