Question:

Thick, lush, soft lawn in Southern Illinois?

I would like a lovely green lawn that feels great to walk on with my bare feet and can handle moderate shade. My kids will be playing on it so it should be somewhat durable. I'm clueless where to even start. Current lawn in our new home is a nightmare. There is crabgrass and bare sports. The ground is hard and bumpy. I can't stand being in our yard. My hope is to have it transformed by this time next year. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks so mcuh!

  1. Spray round up, kill everything and replant the grass. Re seed the grass with a premium seed.  Water at least an inch per week and in the morning so you don't get a fungus.  Fertilize 5 times a year plus a 6th application of winterizer.  Mow the grass at least 3 inches high to promote deep root growth.  Make sure the blades on the mower are sharp so the grass does not get shredded.  When watering deep and infrequent is better than watering everyday as it helps the roots grow deeper.

You can get the lawn that you desire however it is a lot of work.  I'd recommend putting in a sprinkler system as this can save a lot of work.  Then you won't have to get up everyday at 4-5 am and start moving hoses.
