Thidapa Suwannapura a rising star on Symetra Tour
Thidapa Suwannapura is the new emerging face of the game, and we here, are looking forward to the big break this girl of just 19 will be to golf.
Suwannapura’s biggest achievement this season has not been to outshine Esther Choe, who, by the way, was the multiple time winner at the Symetra Tour this season of 2012.
Esther Choe has been playing golf since 8, apparently, having been inspired by the game when she visited a golf course where her father and brother played often.
She had been a figure skater, but over the many hours spent between the golf course wielding wedges and putters and on the ice rink, she decided to switch to the former.
Her performance has been quite extraordinary. The only junior to not be completely under her shadow is Suwannapura, the teenager from Bangkok, Thailand.
Why is Thadipa Suwannapura making the headlines the way she is? Well, for one, her short game.
In the recent, Volvik Race, Suwannapura is the only player to have made the most top 10 and top 20 lists, more than any of the more qualified players, including Esther Choe from Santa Clara, California.
Suwannapura did not make the Volvik Race at first because she fell short, certainly by a paltry few strokes, to make the top 10 Card. You need to make the Card to be able to play in the Tournament.
The subsequent win at the Symetra Tour, undoubtedly, changed all that.
The Ramkhamhaeng University graduate has been playing on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour (LPGA). She had a go at the 2012 Ladies Professional Golf Tour and carded a tie for 55th.
The Symetra Tour is like a boot camp for golfers. Formerly called the Ladies Professional Golf Association Futures Tour, the name (i.e. Ladies Professional Golf Association Futures Tour) gave way to Duramed FUTURES Tour, which then gave way to Symetra. You
see, golf Tours are named after the sponsors that sponsor them.
Thidapa Suwannapura won the Vidalia Championship on the Symetra Tour, Georgia. The September week (September 21 to 23 precisely) was her most memorable performance to date.
