Thierry Henry joins New York Red Bulls
Thierry Henry has successfully completed a move from Catalonia, Spain to New York, U.S.A. The French striking sensation secured a move from La Liga team Barcelona to join Major League Soccer side, the New York Red Bulls.
He has been at the wrong end of the hate of many football fans around the world, mostly from Ireland. This has been due to the way that he handled the ball and kept it in play during the world cup tournament match against Ireland which eventually led to France scoring the winning goal against Ireland and knocking them out of the World Cup.
However it was an instinctive reaction and Henry even told the referee that he handled the ball after the goal was scored and since the referee allowed the goal, it should be him who everyone needs to target their hate towards. Most players including Pele went on to admit that it was an instinctive reaction and had it been any one else in that situation they would have done the same thing.
The United States of America however, don't seem to have any hatred towards the legendary striker. He was offered a multi million, four and a half year contract to join the New York Red Bulls.
Henry was more than pleased to join the club and went on to say, "This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life". "It is an honour to play for the New York Red Bulls. I am fully aware of the team's history and my sole goal during my time here is to help win the club its first championship". "Knowing Red Bull's significant commitment to soccer locally and internationally, I am confident that my teammates and I will succeed."
The Red Bulls manager, Erik Soler was very pleased to see the deal being completed and said he couldn’t wait for Henry to start playing for them, considering the performances he is capebale of delivering. He went on to say, "Thierry is not only a world-class player who will undoubtedly improve our squad, but he has shown throughout his career that he is a winner". "He has made it clear to us that he is committed in the short- and long-term to help in our vision of making our organisation the premium franchise in Major League Soccer."
Henry will be looking to break many goal scoring records in the MLS, he was Arsenal’s record goal scorer and will be looking to do the same in the United States. He will be wearing the number fourteen jersey that he single handedly made famous. He will make his debut against Tottenham, who are the arch rivals of his former team Arsenal.
He will also be partnering former Aston Villa striker, Juan Pablo Angel in the starting lineup at the New York Red Bulls. He has had a rather disappointing World Cup and would be looking to do much better this coming season. The United States have managed to land one of the best players over the past decade and he will only add to the growing popularity of the sport in the country.
