Thierry Schmitter grabs strong position in 2.4mR fleet: 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta
Beginning of the 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta has been outstanding for the Dutch 2.4mR sailor, Thierry Schmitter as he claimed the leading spot of the fleet standings from the start after he clinched a bullet and a second place in the first two races.
However, the Dutch sailor maintained his strong position with impressive sailing on the Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay waters. The third and fourth races proved to be lower finishes for him but still despite two third podium places, Schmitter was able
to keep the leading podium place.
Due to some fluctuation in the final two races, the Dutch sailor tumbled down to poorer podium spots which were troubling for his current place. He crossed the finish line on sixth podium in the fifth race and in eighth during the sixth race. Nevertheless,
a discarded race helped him stay on his current position.
The wind conditions were perfect for sailing from the beginning. The breeze was gusting around the racing area from 12 to 15 knots consistently since the morning. The race committee is hoping that the conditions will remain the same throughout the event.
Helena Lucas of Great Britain, who was on lower podiums in the start, has now cruised into the second place with 15 points. A discarded race along with a couple of high podiums was enough for the British to claim the second position.
