Thierry Schmitter in commanding lead of 24mR fleet: 2012 Skandia for Gold Regatta
Nederland’s Thierry Schmitter had a tremendous start of the 2012 Skandia for Sail Gold Regatta as the Dutch 24mR sailor claimed overall lead of the fleet at the conclusion of Day 1 proceedings at the Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay.
Schmitter had a strong start in the regatta putting up some excellent sailing genius at the Weymouth Bay. Two races commenced on the opening day of the event where 36 nations took part in 24mR racing. Schmitter compiled three points after sailing in the
scheduled two races.
The weather conditions on the Weymouth Bay racing area were quite tough for perfect sailing proceedings. The first day of the regatta saw no winds in the beginning of the racing and the fleet had to wait for the breeze to fill in. However, after a while,
the winds came in and the fleet launched their boats into the waters.
The first race of the 24mR fleet started in the afternoon because of the light winds. The Dutch sailor grabbed early lead in the opening race but Great Britain’s Megan Pascoe snatched the lead and kept it until the finish of the first race.
The second race went the same way as Schmitter cruised into the lead and remained ahead of the fleet until the finish of the race. With these two higher finishes, he claimed the leading podium place. On the other hand, Pascoe hit the second podium finish
in the second race and placed himself on the second position overall.
