Thilan Samaraweera has managed to find a spot in Sri Lanka’s Test squad after being ignored for selection earlier. The team will be heading to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 for a Test and One Day International (ODI) series in December this year.
According to Sri Lanka’s sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, “I had a meeting with the national selectors today and they made a request to add Thilan as an additional player and I have approved that request.”
The final squad is: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CRD-Fernando-c1292, Nuwan Pradeep,
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/HMRKB-Herath-c1559 and Samaraweera.
The reason why Samaraweera has been recalled to the side is that veteran batsman Jayawardene might not be fit for the opening match of the three match Test series in Centurion.
Jayawardene sustained a knee injury during the series against Pakistan in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE) and is expected to be fit in time before the start of the first encounter against the Proteas.
However, the Sri Lankan cricket authorities wanted to make sure that there was no issue during the South African tour and named a senior batsman in the squad as a backup.
Samaraweera will be delighted to get another chance of playing international cricket. He is a top quality Test batsman, averaging more than 50 in the format. He also has 12 centuries to his name, but was unable to perform with consistency in a home series
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and was dropped from the side.
The veteran batsman was kept out of the series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 struggled mainly because of a vulnerable middle-order throughout the three Tests, five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one Twenty20.
The 35-year-old will now be eager to find a place in the playing eleven and prove his worth to the selectors. He will not find things to be easy, as the opposition has one of the best pace attacks in the world.
On the other hand, the Lankan skipper Dilshan will also be happy to have a solid player in the middle-order and will be expecting some success on the Africa soil.
