Thin A/V Receiver?

Hello,

I'm looking at hanging up my 42" Sharp LCD (64U) series in the living room. It's not a massive room, and ties into the kitchen etc.

I will most likely go for Paradigm 110 CT series for speakers and an eventual blu-ray player (if not my PS3).

I am looking though for a good quality, HDMI capable receiver that is thin and not the enermous monters you see everywhere so that i can set it up nicely in the room.

Any recommednations out there?

Much appreciated.

  1. They dont exist (good ones at least).

Amps need a good sized transformer and capacitors for power handling.  While you can find the slender DVD/receiver combo systems - these are known as "class D" amplifiers and are universally dismissed as being crappy.

And the thin receivers tend to be very limited in their connections.

    There is an alternative...

"Receivers" are also known as "Integrated Amps". This is because they combine a LARGE amplifier, with a bunch of electronics/tuners in a single box.  They did not used to be together.

These are available as separate box's called "PreAmp" systems: A thinish box with all the electronics and a large external amp.

Most higher-end audio systems use these, but you can find some that rival the cost of a AV Receiver.  Check out Outlaw Audio as one company.

  2. If you dont want any power go for it. Otherwise you need a pre-pro and sepperate amps for your speakers. How much power you want? Those are nice speakers. If you dont have a good receiver with power youll be dissapointed. Take your time and check everything out. You'll find something.
