Can tile adhesive, (thin set) be applied directly to linoleum, without using backer board? This is for a pretty small area, just going under a washer and dryer. Thanks.

  1. If the vinyl is glued well to cement you can . Use thinset that says on the back that it ll adhere to vinyl.. If your over a wood subfloor take the vinyl up and start anew w/ a cement board .. If going over vinyl rough it up w/ sanding and allow several extra day for drying and grouting since the drying time is slowed when going over a non porous substrate. I don t care to do it this way but w/ proper technique it can be done and will hold  GL

  2. the vibration of the washer and dryer will likly crack the grout

  3. If the sub floor is level and free of any and all bumps or holes no matter how small, yes.

  4. If the underlayment is solid. If the linoleum is not foam backed. If you confirm the original linoleum is still solidly glued. If you sand the linoleum with a coarse grade sand paper. Then yes. Even then it may fail. Why not just remove the linoleum?

  5. never never, if the under floor fails, then your brand new floor fails.

especially under that type of area where the flooring is under unusual stress.
