Question:

Things floating in Chardonnay?

I have a 1993 bottle of Kendall- Jackson Chardonnay. We just took it out of the cabinet when I noticed some black specks floating in the wine. Is that normal, or is there something wrong with it?

  1. If the bottle was standing up, the speck could be from a dried cork. Possible but not probable.

White wines are hard to store for long periods of time. I would open bottle and take a sniff. You'll probably smell vinegar.  Then throw down the drain.

  2. The white specks are Cream of Tarter and are normal for a venerable old Chard. More technically, it's a byproduct of winemaking and is the potassium acid salt of tartaric acid and won't hurt you.

    Got that?

If it's stored correctly is should be lovely!

  3. No that is not normal.  if there is anything floating in there except bits of cork because the bottle was not laid down properly; I suggest you do not drink it.

  4. If it is a '93 is is basically salad dressing now...drink it at your peril.

The flecks are probably minerals precipitating out of solution due to the age of the wine.
