So I'm going with my gf to Cancun for a week long trip. Aside from the resort excursions I.E. Dolphin Swim, Visiting Ruins, Deep Sea Fishing, etc. What else could we/should we do. I.E. where should we shop? club? popular bars (safe ones)? etc.

Thanks a bunch

  1. There are so many activities to do in Cancun, both in the Hotel Zone and on day trips. I highly recommend that if you are going to do a dolphin swim, that you do it with Dolphin Discovery. This company is excellent and you will love the fact that they conduct this tour on Isla Mujeres. After your swim, ask an employee to call you a taxi so you can visit the northern town. This is where you rent a golf cart, in order to see the island on your own self guided day trip. When you are done, instead of worrying about taking the return trip back with DD, take a later ferry back to Puerto Juarez instead. This way you can spend the maximum amount of time on this wonderful island. PJ is located 20 minutes north of the Hotel Zone, so don't worry too much about that, you will take a taxi to meet a bus heading for the HZ, or take the taxi all the way back, your choice. Getting back to Isla Mujeres, you should make it a point to visit Playa Lancheros for lunch, if you like fish. They prepare BBQ fish dish, in the traditional Mayan style known as Tikkin-Xic (pronounced Teek-een-cheeck), incredible flavor. Just get one order to start, it's a lot of food and you can always order more if you are still hungry.

As far as activities in Cancun, I enjoy shopping in the shopping malls, especially Kukulcan Plaza and Plaza La Isla Shopping Village. Plaza La Isla is an outdoor setup and they have incredible restaurants there, such as La Casa de las Margaritas, La Madonna and Thai. My favorite restaurant at Kukulcan Plaza has to be Cenacolo, outstanding Italian fare. In fact, Cancun has hundreds of excellent restaurants, so do yourself a favor and do a little research, find a travel guide with lots of choices and you'll be set.

As for clubs, there are lots of those to choose from as well. The area you will be focussing on is located at Kilometer 9 and is known as the Party Center. There you will find Coco Bongo, a must go, The City, Bulldog Cafe, Dady 'O and Dady Rock (get the 3 clubs in one wrist bands to visit the Grupo Dady O complex) and Carlos 'n Charlie's. CnC's is operated by the same company that runs Señor Frog's, a Cancun classic that someone above recommended to you. If you enjoy techno music then you will enjoy Dady 'O and Basic the most, I might even suggest Nectar Bar on the lagoon if you are interested in finding more of an after hours clientelle.

For the most popular tour, of course that would be a visit to the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. I also recommend this place as it was voted in the top 7 man made wonders of the world. Tulum is another popular site, set on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, it is smaller and a great place to visit as well. Tulum is coupled with a stop at one of the area's eco parks, I recommend you choose Xel-Ha instead of Xcaret because it offers an All-Inclusive package that will save you money. Xcaret is a much larger park and deserves to be visited on its own, and not coupled with Tulum.

Finally, if you are traveling during the summer months, this is when a very unique tour is offered known as a swim with whale sharks. To learn more, visit this list and find them, they're the only one there offering the tour, and with a cancelation/rescheduling policy, something that is almost unheard of in Cancun: http://cancuntop100.com/cgi-bin/in.cgi?i...

  2. Coco Bongo is an awesome club...as is Daddy Rock's.  Senor Frogs is a classic if you have a decent group (mainly classic songs).

The hotel's entertainment staff usually gathers everyone at the hotel for nightly bar-hopping excursions.

Shopping in Cancun...there are two malls that have very high-end merchandise (aka Coach, Gucci, etc.)  and then there is the market (here one can bargain and buy...don't be afraid to walk away because there are 10 others who have the same things).

  3. You gotta go to SEÑOR FROGS

  4. EDIT TO SUNKING:  Actually you are full of cacca.  This i found out doesn't happen in Cancun.  It happens in Mexico City and Aculpoco areas.  Cancun is seen as a $$$$ destination for Mexico on tourism, therefore, they are guarding they're assets.  They are not about to let people like you mention hang around and disturb they're tourists.  As far as the people that this happens to...they SHOULDN'T be wondering beaches drunk by themselves in these abduction areas like the Natalie girl.  That was a bad mistake on her part.  She should have used more common sense.  I'm going to Cancun with my sister and both of us are 25 yrs. old.  to the asker...we are doing many of the same things as you...however, I would suggest giving you're self down time to absorb the beauty and relaxation.  Drink a cocktail by the beach.  Originally we had 4 excurstions planned for 5 days.

    1)Deep sea fishing

    2)Xel Ha

    3) Snuba in Cozumel

    4)ATV/Wave Runner along the sea....

however we both realized 3 of these is more adequate to give us time to shop in the markets.  Don't overdo it.  You are on vacation...and you want to come back refreshed...not feeling like you need another vacation.

P.S.  Where are you staying?  and when?   We are in the Riu Cancun May 15-19th

Have a great trip...I'm so excited!
