  1. ok both have black leather boots....lol thats the best i can do but here are 2 great links with plenty of info..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crete

  2. The only thing that comes to mind, is the lyre. There are many more, just can't think of them.

  3. hmm well, zoltan was right about the balck leather boots.. in crete they are called stivania.

when i think of kriti, i think of... koupes, tsikoudia (raki, etc), zaria, balothies, twirling a koboloi, sarikia (black headdresses), stivania, making bastounia (canes carved from wood), moustakia, gledia, and of course, breeding meraklides.

haha ok maybe this is more on the traditional side.

dont know too much about pontian culture.. beautiful music though!

  4. They both use the musical instrument ''lyra'' in their music, although it's a different kind of lyra.

Cretans sing ''mantinades'', Pontians sing ''distiha''.

Both Pontians and Cretans are very close to their culture: they sing and dance their traditional songs and they are very proud of their culture and history, which dates thousands of years back.

Edit: ''Totally Blunt'', if by ''Karaman'' you mean ''Karamanlis'' you should know that Karamanlides were the Greeks who were living in Cappadocia, who had to speak Turkish because the Ottomans forced them to do so. However, they kept their Orthodox Christian faith in secret.  They were NOT Turks in any way. Why should a Turk in the Ottoman Empire be forced to become an Orthodox Christian? By whom? By the Greeks who were not in power? It doesn't make sense.

  5. i think nothing... pontus is the most north point of Greeks and Crete the most south point....

  6. The Orthodox religion. Yes, that is the factor that makes most Greeks think they are Greeks. Like some Muslims think they are Arabs because they believe in the same religion, speak the same language, although they have different historical backgrounds.

PS. Karaman was an Orthodox Turkish, Turkish speaking village, but the residents were sent away during population exchange because of their religion. I wonder how many ethnic Greeks were sent to Turkey because they were Muslims.

  7. I've never thought of that!  I think it is peculiar since as Nakis above pointed out  one is from the far North and the other from the South that they do have some similarities.  The traditional attire , of course the lira and the music has many similarities.  I mean if you compared Pontious with people from the Peloponisse or Thrace  there would not be these similarities.  Anyway,  thanks for the question I will search on it myself as well!!!!  :-)))
