I am looking at possibly starting the process of building an indoor weapons range and gun shop, and am looking for ideas. Lane length, services( i.e. cleaning room), anything that will attract shooters of all levels? Pretend you are designing the ultimate indoor range, but try to be realistic! Thanks all!

  1. If you are building in the USA Government OSHA standards have to be met for air, sound , bullet trap etc. I think OSHA standards include something like and 8 mile per hour draft of air.

Your air system ( which will have to be inspected and cleaned every so often) will be one of your largest costs. I am sure Osha has a small list of what type of unit you can by. Bullet traps will also be closely watched by OSHA. One possibility is to not allow exposed lead projectiles but that may be getting very picky and might cost you business.

I would expect an indoor range with 8 shooting lines, electric retrieval and all the bells, buttons, and buzzers including building , to cost over 250,000.00 We haven't even gotten to the gun shop part yet or the stock for that, plus the FFL etc. Unless you already own the land you will be talking serious bucks.

I wish you luck but with the liability and lawsuits practices today, your insurance premiums will also be very large. I am sure you can get some very good ideas for ranges on line or even call your local police and speak to their range officer. He may have been in on building that departments range or at least know the company they bought equipment from. Good Luck and I wish you well in your venture.Local Police may later pay to use your range also.

  2. Variable cover situations situations (alowing for practice in more positions that standing, shooting straight ahead), moving targets (both forward/back and side/side) adjustable lighting (to practice low light, when most shooting occur)

  3. The number one thing I look for in an indoor range is air quality. Invest in the best air filtration system you can find.
