Question:

Things that we did as kids but our kids will not do ? At least I think that mine will not.

We were at the pool earlier and we ( some of my friends who grew up together ) started talking about this . Here are a few of mine .

No pool for us -- it was the old fire pump .

Mom would stick a note with money inside and I would go to the corner grocery store ( which was 4 bocks away )

Walk to school

Have a paper route

  1. Ride a bicycle without a stupid helmet.

    Roam the entire neighborhood with no adult supervision.

    Walk to school.

    Fall out of a tree and get a broken arm without someone calling Child Protective Services because they think it was abuse.

    We also didn't sit in front of the TV after school.  We'd go home, change clothes and would play outside until dinner.


  2. I used to buy beer and cigarettes for my parents!

    I was the family remote!

    When I got pong I was entertained for hours!

    It was only considered a beating if they broke whatever they were hitting you with!

    Beating was considered parenting!

    When I was crying my dad had to apparently give me "something" to cry about!!

    We had old spanish textbooks that said "I like to listen to records on the record player" haha.. my kids had no idea what a record was!!

    They don't know smurfs!

    Barbie is out and Bratz are in!

    My parents would turn us out when we got home "and they better not see us until supper time!"

    Like the others, I can remember walking to the store to buy my parent's cigarretes...

    Long days walking down the railroad tracks, just to see where'd they go..

    Playing in old abandoned houses because it was just like a club house..

    haha.. car surfing on a gravel road ~ kids, don't try this one.. haha. but it was fun!

    Blue... lol.. out of town.. past the old abandoned hotel.. and out past the rice fields.. that's as far as I could make it and get home by dark.. and if I wasn't home by dark, I got my bottom busted! And the whole "this hurts me more than it hurts you" speech.. hahaha.. yeah, right.. then why can't I sit down? LOL

    James - oh, and we used to make bonfires in the gravel pits and every now and then catch one of the backhoes or gravel trucks with keys in them and take 'em for a joyride! :)  haha..

    Oh, and going muddin'.. you know, suped up monster trucks with mud tires and roll bars / wench.. out sliding, doing fish tales, 360s, etc.. in the rice fields after harvest.. sinking the trucks to the frame and having to go ask the farmer if we could use his tractor to snatch out the trucks! Whooo hoo.. haha..

  6. Celeste is right on with the bike helmets. If you wore a bike helmet, you were also in special ed.

    When I was a kid I could buy cigarettes for my dad with a note.

  7. No shopping on Sundays.  I still practice that as much as possible, but the idea for the most part is long gone in our society.

    No seat belts

    Neighborhood kids played together until dark and sometimes after.  

    Actually rode a bike to get around instead of parents carting you everywhere.

    Ha Flor, we car surfed too!  And roped mail boxes from the back end of a pickup truck....cowboy I am.

    I seriously almost died as a kid when I fell off of a silo.  My cousin had the bright idea of climbing up the silo to jump on the milk-house roof.  He made it and I didn't.  That ruined my whole summer!

  8. Hitch hike across the country, stay out untill midnight, swim in the river.

    Drink water directly from a lake or stream
