I'm taking the family to County Clare in Ireland for a week at the end of August. We've got two children, a girl of 12 and a boy of 8. Can anyone recommend things to do/see/visit whilst we are there?

  1. This link looks like it has some interesting stuff, it also shows things to do in Limerick:

  2. Visit some of the beaches in Clare. Lahinch and Kilkee are popular spots and there are also plenty of amusements there too, including a Sea-World in Lahinch with loads of different sea creatures.

The Burren is also another attraction...if you love rocky landscapes that go on for miles! Very scenic though and unspoilt by land development.

The Cliffs of Moher are the most popular cliffs in Ireland, you could just stare at them for hours and the drive up there is breath-taking, you could have a lovely picnic up there also, if you get the right weather for it!

You could also visit the Aran Islands too. Boats depart from the Doolin Pier and it would be nice to take in a real bit of Irish culture by visiting these famous Islands.

Bunratty Castle is another famous attraction. Lovely for a family day out, taking in a bit of medieval Ireland too.

Ennis is the main town in Clare and there will be lots of interesting things to do there if you and the kids tire of the country-side!

  3. You could go to the Burren or Bunratty castle

  4. You can do the surfing thing with them, there are places in Miltown Malbay and Spanish Point that do basic surfing with kids, and I think it might be possible at Lahinch also.

Horse-riding is also a good one in Clare, although they might be a bit young for some of the treks across the Burren.

If the weather is not conducive, take them to Seaworld in Lahinch, but absolutely make sure they experience the Aillwee Caves near Ballyvaughn.

Bunratty is okay, and it's good to see how people used to live, but that's just a day. However, check the website, because Bunratty is often the venue for re-enactments of historical events, such as battles between Norman and Gaeilic Chieftains, or the Viking invasion. You might find a way of bringing the history to life!

There is a family-friendly hostel in Doolin, I believe it is the Rainbow Hostel but I'm not sure, and they organise age-appropriate activities for children to give Mums and Dads a chance to go to the pub for a break!

  5. Go to the Burren. Doolin has plenty of live music and kids are always welcome - no matter what time of night!

  6. I went to County Clair a few mounths back from Teesside in England. Go to Buratty Catsle and the cliffs of mohar (I think that how you spell it) and go Lisdonvarna, Limerick & Galway there not far

  7. Taking a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher is a definite must. It's beautiful.

  8. I'd recommend the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre. They have a state of the art interactive centre which children and adults would enjoy.Theres also the Cliffs themselves which can be spectacular.Even a trip through the Burren is amazing as its like living on another planet since theres hardly any trees and miles of limestone pavement and mountains.

If you ands your family like seafood then try Monks Seafood bar and Restaurant in Ballyvaughan, their food is beautiful and the seafood fresh from the ocean.

You can catch boat rides to see the cliffs of Moher or to the Aran Islands from Doolin .

Theres Bunratty with its Castle and Folk park/museum,try their medieval Banquet in the castle ,expensive but a once in a lifetime experience.

If you like Beer try Biddy Early's Brewery in Inagh, they have a microbrewery and also do good bar food.

I believe theres the Seaworld in Lahinch plus several lovely beaches. You can also play golf there if thats your forte.

Just be sure to have fun when you get there, you'll probably find a week isnt long enough to do everything you want to do.
