  1. There's a great indoor swimming pool just outside of Ramstein.

Volksmarches are every single weekend May - September.

Each community has summer festivals/parades on the weekends.

Some communities have "mini-zoos" in their parks.  And the bigger zoos aren't a long drive.

France is 45 minutes from Kaiserslautern.  There are some beautiful areas in that part of France - easy 1 day trips.

Same for castles throughout that region - lots of 1 day trips.

On base, there is alot of info for visiting the region.  Day tours, overnight tours, etc.. at very reasonable rates.

Go to www.af.mil for the Air Force website.  Find Ramstein Air Base website, search there.

  2. Get in contact with the locals, and/or people from your country who already have lived there for a longer time, and tell them about your plans, like "I want to go to an interesting place for my kids and me on Saturday, do you have any idea?" I bet they'll have some good information in store, or will invite you to join them.

But that's something I can just recommend to do everywhere. I'm a German, and I've been to many different places, in- and outside my country, and asking neighbors and people you get to know is always a good thing to do. It'll also help you to overcome some cultural differences. Don't worry, most people here understand English; but if you can spare some time, I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you learned some German.

Whenever I moved to another town, I always tried to find out first where the next two supermarkets and the local pub are, because that's the best way to meet your neighbors. But I'm an adult male with no kids, so that used to be a lesser problem. Maybe with kids, you'll spend more time at home; the more important it is to know your neighbors next door.

  3. France is close.Old castles

  4. I was stationed in Miesau (about 15mins from ALL of the cities you mention above!), and I can tell you there are tons of things to do in the area. Landstuhl castle (called burg Nanstein) is open to the public for a small fee, and during the summer they even have concerts in the courtyard there. 1st link below is the Wiki for Ktown, look it over as it will give you some history and some links to follow up for localized info (there is a great flea-market in K-town along the cobblestone walk in the downtown area almost every Saturday!!). The second link is for the Ramstein-Miesenbach village page. They have a fantastic fall festival in the town square and a nice open air market on the weekends. Ramstein-Miesenbach is a member of a 5 community collective called a Verbandsgemeinde (essentially a group of smallish municipalities that work cooperatively in social and administrative responsibilities.... wheew!) I hope you enjoy the area, I have not been back since 1992 and I miss it every day. Make sure to take advantage of the Wine festival and make at least one trip to Oktoberfest if you are there multiple years! (p.s. sorry iwrote you a book!!!)
