My friend and I are visiting Milan for 5 days next month, can anybody offer any advice on places to go and things to see? Not just in Milan, but in nearby cities that are maybe just a short train journey away. Thanks.

  1. All the other suggestions are good. I personally like Bergamo and Lago Como. If you're in Italy on the 14th of July, go to Venice for the Il Redentore celebration - it's one of the big events there with spectacular fireworks over the lagoon (starting at 11 pm).

In Milan, the roof of the duomo is worth a visit or you might try the Ice Bar for something different. If you want to see the Last Supper, make reservations ahead of time. The big event in Milan in July is the Latin American Festival...music, food, crafts, entertainment.

Another possible day trip would be Florence. It's about the same as a train to Venice in terms of time.

    Have a great time!

  2. Visit the Duomo (one of the biggest gothic church in the world), the Liberty Gallery, the Castle, the "Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci and the Brera Pinacoteca. And don't forget to buy something in the fashion stores!

  3. visit milan and have fun in this city, nightlife is wonderful.. then i suggest you to spend a day in como...

if you have time you can visit verona too, it's only 2 hours from milan...

  4. Milan is very much a "business" city. There are plenty of shops and bars, and despite a stunning cathedral, there are not enough sights for 5 days.

However, Lake Como is lovely and only a 1 hour (and not at all expensive) train ride away. Even better, only about 30 minutes further by train is the town of Lugano in Switzerland which is lovely. From Milan I went to Lugano and then onto Locarno all in a day and was back in Milan early evening.

You are also not too far from Turin or Genoa, both big cities.

Also, the first time I went to Milan was a day trip from Rimini. That was 3 hours by train. You may not want to spend so long on a train, but cities like Parma, Modena and Bologna, all worth a visit, are just 1 to 2 hours by train.

  5. Piazza del Duomo and shopping in Monte Napoleone.

Frankly speaking that they only two places I went. Others, I went to Nice(or Nizza what the italian wrote) and Monarco Monte Carlo (Cote D'Azur) or Pisa (South) to see the leaning tower of Pisa with 4 hours 30 min by train. Return ticket costs about 52 Euro (2nd Class but nice and cosy).

I used treno italia. Visit the site below.

  6. Milan????? a great place.... SHOPPING and SHOPPING and SHOPPING......to watch fashion show!!!!

  9. Out side of Milan - Milan's hinterland.

    1. Venice is a 3 hour one way and 3 hour return. Very doable. Leave on a 7 am train and return to Milan on the 6pm train, in time for dinner in Milan

    2. Verona is another day trip - about 1 and half hour train ride one way.

    3. You can also do Genoa in a day. Great city - best pesto in the world!

    4. A day trip to Bergamo Alto - the old part of Bergamo above the new part.

    Milan's hinterland:

    5. Hey, forgot to mention Monza! and the Duomo and the park and the Royal Villa. If you play golf you can even get a round in in the park. rthen again I don't think it's members

    only.

    6. Lecco - out side of Milan on the "via per Lecco" beautiful city on the lake - history and important setting for Manzoni's book.

    7. Varese - another lovely lake side city. See the reference below.
