Things to do in Nashville?

I am going to USA and Nashville, Tennessee, on vacation this summer, and with that I have a few questions to locals

or anyone who's been there at some point.

1. What kind of sights should we be looking for while we are in Nashville? Which sights does this city have which is well worth a visit?

2. How is the cuisine? What kind of food will we find there? Are there restaurants/cafes etc which is worth a visit?

How much will an average dinner on a restaurant run?

3. What are the prices of alcohol? How much will a glass of beer or a drink (whiskey, gin & tonic etc) run us out on the city?

Are there any good bars/pubs which is worth a visit? Are there any kind of local alcohol/beer we should be thinking of acquiring?

4. What kind of night life is there in Nashville?

Sights: The Frist Center is a world-class art museum. The admission price is reasonable. Don't miss it. If you are interested in American history, then tour the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson. And be sure to take a walking tour of downtown. If you are interested in a bus tour, the Nash Trash tour is great! The Ryman Auditorium is a great tour, as well as  great venue for live music. Of course, don't miss Music Row and the Country Music Hall of Fame,

    Now to cuisine: Nashville is all about soul food. There are great "mom and pop" places all over town! They are known locally as "meat and threes", because that is the typical special at lunch: your choice of entree and 3 sides. Here are a few, and some have web sites: Swett's in North Nashville , Sylvan Park (3 locations in Nashville) , Rotier's, which is near Vanderbilt on Elliston Place , and Arnold's Country Kitchen on 8th Ave very near downtown . The best breakfast in Nashville, in my opinion, is Athens Family Restaurant on Franklin Rd. This is a Greek cafe that serves up a great American breakfast. And if you are brave and love spicy food, you can't leave Nashville without having sampled hot chicken. This is a local specialty, and everyone has their favorite. The original is Prince's Hot Chicken Shack on Knight Drive. Price-wise, food here is a bargain. Any of  the aforementioned spots will set you back for under $10 per person.

      I'm not much of a drinker, but a cocktail usually runs about $5-6, and beer  $2-3.50. Locals and tourists alike go to Bosco's in Hillsborough Village (near Vandy). The atmosphere is fun and casual. Jackson's (across the street from Bosco's)  is good as well, and has a large patio.

     Jack Daniel's and George Dickel are both made in Tennessee. Any place with a liquor license will offer them.

      Nightlife: Check the Cannery Ballroom/Mercy Lounge. There is a web site which will tell you who is playing. Exit/In is a great joint as well. You may hear just about anything at these spots. A favorite of mine is the Bluegrass Inn, which showcases acoustic and roots music. And no trip to Nashville is complete without a visit to legendary Tootsies' Orchid Lounge.  Tootsie's has a great house band and you can choose the upstairs or downstairs rooms. And you never know who will show up and sit in with the band.

Drinks are normal price.  $4ish bucks.  Nashville for the visitor-  you gotta hit the strip, music row.  you'll wanna go to BR549 (a bar), youll wanna go across the street to ernest tubbs record shop.  station inn is awesome...  as far as food, youre gonna be eating southern.  bbq, fried catfish, hushpuppies, grits.... make sure to get some sweet tea.

the problem with nashville for people who dont know much about roots music, bluegrass, or country...  you wont get a full appreciation of the place.  there is a HUGE amount of history there.  without knowledge and interest, you may not find it so much fun.  but let me tell you-  if i were you i would be in heaven spending time in nashville.

if you get any opportunity, go to the ryman auditorium.

edit:  dinners are of average cost.  $7-10 a person.  this isnt a fancy city.  youll get the best food at tiny hole in the wall places for $5.  the food is great.  try the local cuisine for sure.

night life, for a visitor, youre pretty much stuck on music row, which isnt huge- however, you can walk to quite a few bars, pay no cover, spend minimal money on drinks, and watch lots of live music.  its fun.

1. The Frist Center is nice.  They have a good collection and have changing exhibits.  

2. You can find a lot of different options in cuisine, but make sure you experience real Southern American cooking, which, aside from yummy is also usually quite cheap.

3. There are lots of places to wet your whistle.  None will be particularly expensive.  Nashville is not an especially "high-dollar" town.

4. There are lots of places along "Music Row".  You'll have a great time.

I would go to the Wild Horse Saloon on Broadway. It is a one stop dinner/party shop. Very nice atmosphere. Check the web for special events/concerts. I usually stay downtown at the Sheraton or Best Western and walk to around downtown. There's a variety of restaurants-anything from Hooter's to B.B. Kings (which I also recommend). The Hard Rock is also on Broadway which is on the river. The Titans stadium is also downtown. It is a very clean downtown, compared to other major cities. The Gaylord/Opryland Hotel is also very nice.
