Question:

Things to do in Negril...waterfalls?

Hi all,

I'm off to Jamaica next month and wondered if any one had any advice on things to do/see? I know our tour operator will probably have excursions etc on offer but i'd love to know what other people have to say who have been there.

Waterfalls seem like a BIG must, however have read some stuff on them and they just seem like one big tourist attraction with lifeguards and roped off areas where you cant go and restaurants, i'd love to find somewhere a bit quieter to just relax with my partner...does this exist?

Would love any advice you've got, restaurants, bars, beaches, shopping, culture, sports (quad biking, horseriding etc).

THANK YOU! x

  1. You're going to have a blast!

One bar you have to see is Rick's (I'm almost positive that's the name but it's been a little while since I've been there).  They have cliff divers, strong drinks, and some of the nicest bartenders I've ever met.

If you have the time I'd suggest going "in town" (away from the developed beach) and eat at a little restaurant.  The jerk chicken, although spicy, was incredible and went down really smooth with a cold beer.

As for sports, I'd say you need to go scuba diving or snorkelling.  Or if you're inclined, find a game of soccer on the beach (they were everywhere)

And at night?  Oh wow.  Just find a club.  I saw Sean Paul perform one night and his show was incredible.

    Enjoy yourself!

  2. OMG - Negril is so beautiful.  You're going to be in heaven.  I'm so jealous.

If you want to be taken around the area by wonderful guides, these are THE people to do it.  They're by far the most popular company in the area.  We spent 2 days with Sienna and her husband Sala and they were the 2 best days of our vacation!  They will email back and forth with you before your trip and customize your entire tour.  Here is their website:

  4. Hi I stayed at Beaches Negril for 2wks last year and can honestly say that yes it's a beautiful country but not much to do outwith your hotel,  everything is hotel based. The best waterfalls are the Duns River Falls but they are over a 4hr drive away, which I did'nt manage due to having my 4ry old with me. Ricks Cafe and Margaritaville are a must see though, nice and relaxing with good food and drink. There is one shopping centre called Times Square, do not be fooled by the name, there is only a few Jewellery shops there and a couple of shops that sell tat basically. I did not see any quad biking but can highly recommend going Jet skiing, look out for a guy called Pete on the beach, he does the best deals. The Jamaican people are absolutely fantastic, so freindly! I am sure you will have a fantastic time! Wish I was there again now instead of here in Bonnie Scotland!

    Have a great trip!

  5. 1. Go climb Dunns River Falls which is located in Ocho Rios. It is the most beautiful and famous waterfall ever !

    2. Go to Dolphin Cove and swim with the dolphins which is also located in Ocho Rios. You get to swim with dolphins, you can touch iguanas and all sorts of animals. It's fun !

    3. Go to Hooves you get to ride on horses through water, mountains..etc. It's fun ! Plus it has a restaurant and other stuff where you can relax.

    4. Rick's Cafe ! You definetely must go there ! It is a must ! You can go cliff diving there.

    5. Party ! Party ! Negril is Jamaica's #1 Party spot ! Enjoy yourself ! Jamaica is a beautiful place !

  6. The best and most famous waterfalls in Jamaica are the Dunns River Falls but unfortunately they're about 4 hours drive away from Negril. However, it would be worth taking a day to go to Dunns River Falls and Dolphin Cove which are very close together. The falls are fantastic, they are very commercial but not overly so. the beach at the bottom of the falls is where Ursula Andress came out of the water in the James Bond film.

Dolphin Cove is a great experience but take plenty of money for the photos and DVD. They protect the DVD making it very difficult to print your own photos from it later. If you do go to Dolphin Cove book as soon as you arrive because they're often booked up about 10 days in advance.

Near Negril you have to visit Rick's Cafe which is rated as one of the top ten bars in the world, the cliff divers are brilliant but be careful about looking at the kids before they jump otherwise they'll be over to you for payment! Sunset is the best time to go.

Friends did go horse riding on 7 mile beach which they really enjoyed.

    Have a great time!

  7. There is a lot to do in Negril or absolutely nothing but laze on the beach all day soaking up the sun and when you feel toasted go take a dip.

there is glass bottom boat rides across the sea  towards the caves.

then there is the night life.

You will need more than a week

  8. Hi

We have a holiday home in Jamaica not far from negril

So things to do while you are there

    Waterfalls

Dunns River you can walk up the falls there but take my advice and get one of the local taxi drivers to do you a deal much cheaper than reps tours and get ther early you have the falls almost to yourself then before the coaches come !

Be there for about 8-30 and you will have good time .

Price for taxi around $40-50 us ok takes about 11/2 hours to get ther from negril.

    Horse riding on the beach

There is a company called CHUKKA BLUE  they are not far from negril they do the following

    Horse riding

    Quad bike safari

    Self drive boat safari

Negotiate for everything ok no prices are fixed in Jamaica .

    Nightlife

    Negril

Club Called Jungle is fantastic thursdays nights ladies get in free  this place is a real eyeopener ! dont go till at least 10-30 ok and you are safe

The Hotels will tell you its not safe out but thats rubbish ok just treat it like any other major city and you will be fine .

    Negril Beach

7 miles of warm clear water and bounty adds beach !

    Hustlers

Millions of them but a firm no thanks will stop most ok .

    Ricks Cafe

Very specaculaer for the high diving but boy expensive .

right next door to ricks is a fantastic bar / resteraunt which will not rip you off and the food is very good . go and come by taxi ok do not walk about that area at night it is not good and it is the west end of negril !!!!!
